May 2021 Newsletter - The Year in Review

This June is the one-year anniversary of our board and I am so proud of all we have achieved!  I am excited to share those accomplishments, along with our future plans, at the annual chapter meeting which is tentatively scheduled for June 30.  The annual chapter meeting will be held in person and online; details are forthcoming.

As we reflect on the past twelve months, our chapter has

  • Grew membership from 192 to 355 members
  • Hosted at least one event per month
    • A total of 1746 registrations across all events
    • Created new athletic events, including bike rides and a run club
    • Created new professional events, including mentoring, policy discussions, and transition support (military to civilian)
      • 63 registrants for the bike rides
      • 215 registrations for the transition series events
      • 107 registrants for the policy series events
      • 122 registrants for the annual picnic
      • Supported the Naval Academy by hosting 2 candidate events (Fall/Spring)Over 800 registrations and 667 attendeesWorldwide interest, including DoD participants stationed in Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Bahrain, Saudia Arabia, UK and Germany  
      • The Fall event contributed to the largest USNA application increase in a one-week period for our region (DC, DE, MD, and VA)
  • Partnered with career transition services and professionals
  • Appointed a USNA Liaison Officer (CAPT Jill Rough ’96)
  • Planning for representation on the board from Blue and Gold officers, SIGs (Significant Interest Groups), and the local USNA Parents Club
  • The chapter is financially solvent and sustainable

What is most exciting is that registrations and attendance were always reflective of the diversity of our membership.  At any of our events, you would find members from the classes of the 60s to the present, men and women, and all ethnicities represented.  As far as the attendance to registration ratio, we typically had no less than 50% of registrants attend an event.  However, many events had most registrants attend.

All of this from a team of volunteers, who maintain full-time employment, with each contributing up to 10 hours per month to the chapter.  Please take a moment to recognize the board members, listed at the bottom of this letter, and thank them for their service.

CHAPTER ELECTIONS

There will be two vacancies on the board.  The first is Secretary, an officer position, and the other is a director of membership.  Our nomination committee is working on the balloting process.  If you are interested in joining our board, then email us at contactus@usnagwc.org.

Board members are volunteers who are elected by the membership and serve 3-year terms.  The board meets every month and each member contributes approximately 10 hours per month.  Directors are expected to organize at least one event per year and support another director in the planning and execution of their event.

USNA SUPPORT 

The board elected (promoted) CAPT Jill Rough '96, USNR, PhD as the chapter's first USNA Liaison Officer. This position will support the Academy and the community by working with USNA admissions, the parents club, local congressional offices (to keep informed and assist candidates with information on the nomination process), and SIG groups.  The chapter is tasked with this effort in the by-laws, but no director had ever been formally tasked with these responsibilities.   Jill's work this year has been paramount in establishing this position.  We are thankful for all her contributions and are excited to have her as an officer of the board.

We continued our support to Midshipmen, and had several in attendance at our annual chapter picnic.  More on that below.

CAREER TRANSITION

As mentioned in the April 2021 newsletter, for those who are considering starting a business, we are working on a series similar to the career transition series, focused  on alumni entrepreneurs sharing their experience. The first one will take place in June with Dennis Holden '01, founder of Eco-Sprout.  Event details are forthcoming.

SOCIAL EVENTS

PICNIC: Our picnic was an immense success! Thank you to all who attended; see pictures hereWe had 115 total attendees, class range: 1968 - 2025, 2000's decade had the most attendees with 34, and the class of 1992 was the most represented class with 11 attendees.  Yes, you read that correctly -- up to the class of 2025!  We had Midshipmen and a NAPSTER who recently graduated and was USNA bound.  Along with that, we also had candidates attend.  We are very proud of the diversity of the attendees.  That is what the Naval Academy family looks like - alumni from multiple generations coming together. 

Golfers!  The 13th annual commander's cup golf tournament is scheduled to be held on July 22nd, 2021.  USNA AA GWC is not involved or associated with the tournament.  However, we are interested in supporting events that build comradery among our alumni.  The event will take place at Westfields Golf Club in Clifton, VA.  Refer to the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter for registration information. 

Cyclists! We unfortunately had to cancel our May 30th bikeride due to weather.  Stay tuned for the next ride. Please be sure to thank Kate Murray '00 for all her great work coordinating these events and hosting them. 

Order your USNA AA GWC bike jersey for our next bike or for your own personal rides.  Kate did a great job designing the jersey which can be seen below.  Note that the purchase and transaction is through a third party vendor. We will not be able to provide customer service but please let us know if you experience any trouble with the vendor.

Runners! Our next run is on June 12th (0900-1100) and will meet at the center of Lincoln Park next to the Emancipation Memorial (1203 East Capitol St SE) a few minutes early, so we can begin promptly at 0900. Plenty of parking is available nearby. Capital Bikeshare is adjacent to the park, and Eastern Market metro is approx 1/2 mile away. 

A more detailed map will be provided to runners ahead of the event, but in general, we'll be staying in the Capitol Hill area. Water and Gatorade will be available. If you are interested in celebrating afterwards, please join the group for brunch near Eastern Market!
